During the Joplin R-8 Board of Education candidate forum Monday night at Corley Auditorium on the Missouri Southern State University campus, candidate Shawn McGrew had no problem fielding a question on school finances from KOAM reporter Lisa Olliges.
"A huge part of what we're responsible for is fiscal responsibility for taxpayer dollars," McGrew said, beginning his answer. He ended by noting again that "fiscal responsibility is what we have to be focused on."
McGrew's assessment was correct, but documents on file in Jasper County Circuit Court indicate McGrew, who wants to be elected to a position where he would be responsible for millions of dollars, has had problems with his own finances.
The Missouri Department of Revenue slapped Nathan Shawn McGrew with a tax lien on August 23, 2013, according to court records. The document says McGrew owed $1,246.14- $1,236.19 for unpaid 2009 personal income taxes and a $9.95 penalty.
An October 28, 2013, filing from the Department of Revenue's Collection Enforcement division indicates McGrew paid what he owed.
The income tax lien was not the only financial problem the board candidate faced in 2013, according to the court documents. Judge Richard Copeland awarded Mid-America Accounts Control Bureau, a collection agency, a $735.96 judgment against McGrew on May 14, 2013. That included $460 McGrew owed and $275.96 in interest. In addition, McGrew was charged $318 for court costs, including sheriff's fees and process server fees.
Court records show McGrew's wages at Freeman Health were garnished until the judgment was satisfied on November 1, 2013.
Good thing for McGrew it's April Fools Day!
ReplyDeleteWhat an outstanding example of stewardship and civic responsibility. Oh yes, I feel safer knowing this man will be helping to solve the economic woes of the R8 Schools. Did he think no one would notice? I have to pay my taxes so the schools can run. And, this wasn't exactly a monumental amount.
ReplyDeleteThis is what Huff picks to run. Do you all see the problem now? And he's also on the Bright Futures board. He should step out immediately. I can see why Anson finds him so appealing, though...
Please step out of the race, Mr. McGrew. You are more a part of the problem than a part of the solution. We don't need more irresponsible people in R8. That's how we got in this mess. I no longer believe you can be trusted with the public money, since you had to be forced into paying your share.
ReplyDeleteBoo! Hiss!! Get off the ship!! We don't need your kind in R8! WE have plenty like you already, mate.
ReplyDeleteVote for McGrew if you want the great ship R8 to sink to the bottom of an abyss in the deep, dark sea. He, Huff, Flowers, and Landis will get it there in just no time at all.
ReplyDeleteSo this isn't a joke?
ReplyDeleteAnd Huff encouraged him to run why? Great job of vetting, for sure. This goes to show the fine quality of altruistic, caring people running Bright Futures, where millions of donations were summarily dumped, and where hundreds of thousands of tax dollars from the R8 budget get spent every year. Don't believe me? Check the budgets for the last two years. Over 700 grand each time. And this man helps oversee that operation, when he can't even manage his own finances.
ReplyDeleteDon't forget that the woman who runs Bright Futures has declared bankruptcy twice on nothing but credit card debt in the 10s of thousands. See a pattern yet? I do.
I guess if the Joplin Lack of Progress Committee wanted candidates who wouldn't change anything, they couldn't do any better than this guy! He's just like CJ and the Gang! Spend what you don't have and stick the taxpayer for the bill. Good Job, JPC, good job...
ReplyDeleteI wonder how many of the Joplin Progress Committee are associated with Freeman Health Systems other then a few doctors.
ReplyDeleteThis is just sad. A man runs for the School Board, says in a forum that he has the expertise to save the district from its bad financial state, and then he doesn't even pay his taxes until forced. Are the other years up to date, or are there more tax liens on the way? What else is he hiding in his closet?
ReplyDeleteFunny, I don't see CJ sending out any messages that this isn't true...
ReplyDeleteDon't vote for ANY of the Huff candidates. None of them will have a "fresh perspective" or they wouldn't be running to save Huff's agenda.
WHAT A HACK & JERK!
ReplyDeleteHaving known this person and his family for a long time, I would also like to point out that Mr. McGrew was behind with child support for five years, just getting current in 2013. He also doesn't pay the expenses he is supposed to for his child's education.
ReplyDeleteGREAT person to be representing the Joplin Schools. Too bad more people didn't see this article!
Bright Futures and the Joplin School District should ask him to resign immediately.
You should drug test him too and see what you find...
ReplyDeleteHe is not at Freeman anymore, suddenly. Hmmmm?
