Joplin High School communication arts teacher Jessica Low, a candidate for the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce's Golden Apple Award in 2013, is behind bars after sending inappropriate photos of herself to male students, according to Joplin Police Lt. Matt Stewart.
Stewart told KSN that students are being interviewed today at the Children's Center. Ms. Low, who is completing her second year in the district, has been charged with statutory sodomy for an alleged relationship with one student. Police said other students are being interviewed to determine if there are additional victims.
The Joplin Police Department arrested Ms. Low at the 9-10 center (the former Memorial Middle School) shortly after school ended Wednesday.
The investigation began after school officials received a tip and relayed it to the police.
Joplin R-8 Superintendent C. J. Huff is scheduled to make a statement to media at 3:30 p.m.
I'd like to see some form of investigation into the students side of it. In any situation like this (not that the teacher in question should have known better) I feel the victim card is over used and not appropriate
ReplyDeletein the state of missouri it's a felony for a teacher to have contact with a student no matter what age or consent. therefore, the student is a victim. if the cops are taking her mug shot and filing charges then there is some merit to it. even though mr. turner has posted blogs that werent true before the ones where the teacher has a mugshot and charges filed against them hold a lot of weight.
ReplyDeletenot sure if you heard but there was also a commerce coach, your favorites, being investigated. and i commented earlier about the ozark christian college professor. if you are going to post about one area teacher with charges then post about them all.
I am a student at JHS and Mrs. Low was my 7th Hour teacher. She was a very laid back playful kind of teacher. Nothing about her every seemed inappropriate about her, and she didn't seem like the kind of person to do this. I am REALLY shocked about this. I was never given, nor seen any of the photo's and do not want to! Im just so shocked O.O
ReplyDeletefor real as far as Im concerned if you are old enough to go to jail (which is 17 in Missouri) than you should be able to have a sexual relationship with anyone you want even if it is a teacher... to me that's taking our rights away!!!! what now the government can say who we can and can't be with??? its just my opinion but i think some of these cases are bs
ReplyDeleteIt would be a different story if the student being named the victim was, in fact, a junior or senior -making them at least 17- but Low was a freshman teacher. In the article, it also says that she had just finished her 2nd year in the district, making it more likely that the male student was either a freshman or sophomore because those are the only students she would have had direct contact with inside the classroom.
