Plans were thwarted Friday when the new High School/Franklin Tech Center did not pass the city inspection. Though Superintendent C. J. Huff is still insisting that school will on time Monday, August 25, it looks as though it will not be possible to move things into the building until the last moment.
The following message was sent out this evening to potential volunteers from College Heights Christian Church:
IMPORTANT UPDATE for volunteers helping with the move into the new Joplin High School!
Unfortunately, the new Joplin High School building didn’t pass the city’s inspection for occupancy yesterday. The administration still has every intention of being ready for school on August 25 and requests our prayers to that end. They remain hopeful that they can begin moving in on Tuesday, but for now we will NOT be helping with the move on Monday.
They have other needs that we can help meet on Monday. They are outlined below.
Meet at the Joplin School’s Administration building at the corner of Duquesne and 32 Street. Please park in the rear of the building (the Pillsbury side). We are to enter through the center door on that side of the building. There will be someone there to guide you to a job.
*The morning shift will begin at 9:00 AM, NOT 8:00 AM. The afternoon shift will still begin at 1:00 PM.
The morning shift will have three options, all of them are light work.
1. Help in their distribution area fill backpacks with school supplies and deliver them to the elementary schools.
2. Assemble 107 binders for teachers.
3. Do the prep work for the assembly of 2300 binders for JHS students.
The afternoon shift has two options:
1. Assemble 2300 binders for the JHS students
2. Set-up and decorate for a new teacher’s meeting next week at the 9/10 campus in the old Memorial High School building. (We will only help with this if we have enough volunteers to assemble the binders first.)
If you have any questions or concerns please don’t hesitate to call Julie St. Clair at 825-4529. We still have an awesome opportunity to love our neighbors as we love ourselves in the name of Jesus! Let’s make the most of it!

Oh here we go. First it's Wednesday, then next week. Before you know it, our kids aren't starting school for days and days, and they've already had ten days cut off. We knew this would happen when the Board let him put out that stupid calendar last spring. They should have told him no. If there is any chance the building won't be ready, then start where you are. But as usual, they cowered behind him and now we have yet another mess. I despise our board as much as the idiot they indulge, and I wish those putting together the recall election all the luck in the world.
ReplyDeleteAnyone who is surprised by this hasn't driven by that school where they are throwing it together and cutting corners to meet Cj's starting date. There will be all kinds of problems if they don't slow down and do it right.
ReplyDeleteLet's see. My little kids don't go to school until the 25th because it was projected the new high school wouldn't be done on time, which it won't. If the high school is delayed, is the stupid school board going to put off educating my children, too? Can they please go to school? Not that our schools are any too great, but they are all we have. Please stop denying my children their education so the Taj Mahal can be finished and CJ can have his magic moment with the media. I think the Board is addicted to the attention, too. They're sure not too worried about learning.
ReplyDeleteSend the kids back to the mall and Memorial. Stay safe.
ReplyDeleteThey all ready cleaned it out....and the lease was up so they have no choice now
DeleteTo quote Gomer Pyle, "Surprise, surprise, surprise!"
ReplyDeleteWhy is the district giving the kids binders if they have computers? Or the teachers? How 20th Century is that?
ReplyDeleteYour tax dollars at work.

my husband is helping with the construction of the building. He's told them they wouldn't be ready, but district was set on getting moved in. I get the urgency to a point, but what is the harm in taking your time and doing it right, and moving at the semester break? My husband is frustrated because people above him say "things are a go" and then he gets there and it's "not even close" and what my husband does is an important part of this project. He will not rush the work...they are already having issues with Irving from last year's "quick build" and they have to keep fixing and repairing over there. Same situation, need to move "Now" but cut corners just to make deadlines....never more frustrating words in a construction workers vocabulary. I am a teacher in the KC Metro area and look forward to seeing when the building is complete, but, for pete's sake, the school board needs to stop meddling in the affairs of these workers. Let them do their job and do it right. Unless you want another storm to come through there and you're caught unprepared because of a "short cut" to get it done quickly.

ReplyDeleteDon't bet your money on that.
