State agencies provide training to educators in wake of Ferguson

(From the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education)

The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education teamed up with the Missouri Departments of Mental Health and Social Services on Thursday for a training session that provided training and resources for St. Louis area educators regarding the recent events in Ferguson.

The training at Harris-Stowe State University provided district staff with materials and information on how to identify signs of trauma, and how best to work with students as they process recent events. The group also learned how to identify children that may need more extensive assistance and support from mental health professionals. Those in attendance had the opportunity to share and discuss the trauma they have encountered during the last two weeks.

"After parents, teachers and other school staff are quite often the first to see signs of severe stress and trauma in children," said Commissioner of Education Chris Nicastro. "Our effort was to provide the educators with effective tools and tips on helping children process the recent events in North County. This training represents the first session of the ongoing support the Departments of Education, Mental Health and Social Services will provide to schools."

Commissioner Nicastro plans to meet with area superintendents next week to discuss their specific needs for services going forward. Other school districts from across the state can use the presentation below to assist students and teachers managing this situation.
