(From Fourth District Congresswoman Vicky Hartzler)
Congresswoman Vicky Hartzler (MO-4) today spoke out against the recent findings in a nonpartisan Government Accountability Office (GAO) report showing that, despite President Obama’s clear promise, taxpayer dollars are being spent on abortion plans under Obamacare. After speaking at a press conference on the issue in front of the House steps this afternoon, Congresswoman Hartzler released the following statement:
“We are here today to stand up for truth in government, to defend the value of every unborn child, and to respond to yet another broken promise from our president. In 2009, President Obama told Congress, ‘Under our plan, no federal dollars will be used to fund abortions, and federal conscience laws will remain in place.’ The recent GAO report shows that abortions are indeed being paid for by taxpayer dollars, and that is simply unacceptable. We now know that, using an accounting gimmick, the president has broken his promise.
The vast majority of Americans – whether pro-life or pro-choice – believe taxpayer dollars should not be used to fund abortions, yet the GAO identified 1,036 plans that cover abortion. Most policies gave no transparency of abortion coverage and the administration is not enforcing the law. It is time for President Obama to be a man of his word.
In February of this year, my colleagues and I in the House passed, with bipartisan support, H.R. 7, the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Actwhich would prohibit federal funding of abortions and promote the value of unborn children. I stand here today to call on Senator Reid to do the right thing: bring H.R. 7 up for a vote.”
