In a portion of his latest newsletter, Rep. Don Phillips, R-Kimberling City, addressed Gov. Jay Nixon's handling of the situation in Ferguson after the announcement of the grand jury's decision:
Governor Nixon has come under fire, and rightfully so, for failing to utilize the National Guard on the Monday evening of the riots in Ferguson when some 25 businesses were set on fire and destroyed. In a Southeast Missouri appearance the Governor finally answered the question (why?) and he stated that he wanted to preserve lives that night and not property. While it’s true no lives were lost, if all the businesses on Florissant St. in Ferguson would have had a strong National Guard presence, it’s doubtful the violence would have escalated as much as it did and the businesses could have been saved.
