Lane Roberts drops out of school board race, appointed to statewide job

Barring the late entry of a write-in candidate, it appears that Anne Sharp and Jeff Koch will be elected to the Joplin R-8 Board of Education.

A short while ago, during a news conference in Joplin, Gov. Jay Nixon announced the appointment of former Joplin Police Chief Lane Roberts to the recently vacated position of head of the Missouri Department of Public Safety.

Asked during the news conference if this meant he would be dropping out of the Joplin R-8 Board of Education race, Roberts said he was withdrawing his candidacy.

What about a "write in" candidate?

Can anyone name a person who would be a good choice for a "write in" vote (and who wants to be on the school board)????

Write in Julie Hartwell or Dana Snodgrass.

Why not select a "write-in" candidate?

Find the right person who wants to be on the school board - and write in their name.

I'm happy for him, but this is sad for the R8 election. Can a candidate still receive the position if no one votes for her? Something to ponder??

    Well, this sucks.

Is it too late to have someone throw their hat into the race? I'm with 11:08, Dana Snodgrass would make a great choice. What do you say Dana? You're a good man.

How about you, Randy? Would you consider trowing your hat in. I cannot take another year of this board.

    Satterlee? Really?
Satterlee was behind the Vote Hope efforts in 2010 to pass the bond issue.
Susan Satterlee was on the VH committee with CJ, Banwart,Kim Vann, Paul Barr, Logan Stanley.
    Brilliant!

  13. Candidates have to file by next Friday 5 p.m. I will not be a candidate. There are a number of people who would make excellent school board members. I don't intend this to sound like I am full of myself, but there is only one person who can do what I have been doing. And we do need alternative news coverage in the Joplin area.

Susan Satterlee here regarding anonymous @ 1:15 I am proud to have been on the committee that helped the community pass said bond issue. Joplin island always has been supportive of public education. I am against wasteful or deficit spending under any guise. I do not support Common Core. I support our wonderful teachers who just want to teach. I learned long ago that the spending of someone else's money i.e. the publics is easy . Much more difficult is stringent stewardship of said funds. 1:15 whoever you are please feel free to contact me about your concerns. Please forgive typos.

The best chance we have of keeping Anne off the board is to vote in Roberts. When he steps down the board will select a replacement until the next election. Then the voters can choose who fills in for the last two years. If we write in and don't get enough votes Anne will be deadweight for another three years. It is hard to swim with an anchor attached.

Is it certain that Roberts name will be on the ballot? (how can we find out for sure??)

If Roberts name is on the ballot - then as 3:30 said - it is best to vote for him.

Randy, is 3:30 correct or delusional? In my opinion the board will make up it's own rules and put whoever they damn well please in. But please tell me that 3:30 is correct!

Bob Steere would make an excellent write-in candidate. Please Dr. Steere would you consider this. It is galling to have Anne Sharp remain on the board without any responsibility to the students, parents and taxpayers of the Joplin school district.

  24. It depends on who wins. From what I have seen so far, Sharp, Campbell, and Good are all likely to support the status quo, while Koch and Martucci are not. If Roberts, Koch, and Martucci win, then the board would probably be a 3-3 split (not counting Roberts, of course). That would mean there would either have to be a compromise candidate or one group would have to convince someone from the other group to change sides. If Roberts and Sharp were elected, and either Good or Campbell won the one-year seat, you would have business as usual, probably for at least the next two years. A write-in candidate would have an uphill battle. You would have to find someone with some name recognition and a good reputation, but then you would also have to educate the public on how to cast their write-in votes properly. And remember that there are only 19 days left before the election.

  25. Roberts' name will be on the ballot. The ballots have been printed and have already arrived at the Jasper County Clerk's office.

We need to encourage everyone to vote for Roberts, Koch and Martucci! The best scenario is that Roberts is elected along with Koch and Martucci. The BOE would then have to appoint someone to fill Roberts' vacated seat. We need to have a strong candidate apply so CJ can't push for Anne to be appointed. A candidate with enough clout and intelligence that the BOE wouldn't risk not appointing.

I have to agree with those who are saying stick with the original plan and vote for Roberts. With a write-in we risk the chance of a split vote that could put Anne in and Koch out. We need Koch and Martucci, and Roberts can be replace later.

Vote Roberts, Koch, and Martucci if you want to see changes.

I agree with the others who say vote for Roberts, Koch and Martucci. Even if we are stuck again with Ms. Sharp, the voter can send a clear message to her of our disapproval.

    1:15,
I also helped pass that bond issue. I believed everything that I was told, including that West Central and Columbia would be rebuilt/replaced/re-something. Did that bond need to be passed? I still think, yes. Was the money used as it was supposed to be? Absolutely not. Many people have been deceived. Some have wised up and see what repulsive and corrupt people these are. Some have not.
    No more Kool-Aid for me.
