MODOT appears to have gone roundabout crazy and has scheduled a public meeting in Joplin to talk about its latest project, in which not one, but two, roundabouts are going to be added.
The MODOT news release is printed below:
Public Invited to Learn About Crossroads Interchange
Construction at March 17 Meeting
Those interested in the construction of a new interchange at I-44/I-49 and Prigmor Avenue (Jasper County Road 190) east of Joplin are invited to a public meeting to learn more about the project and the resulting traffic impacts on March 17, at the Joplin Public School Administration building at 3901 East 32nd Street, the Missouri Department of Transportation said.
The meeting scheduled for 4 to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, March 17, will be a come-and-go style meeting with NO formal presentation.
MoDOT and contractor representatives will be on hand to answer questions from those attending about the stages of construction and how those stages will impact traffic on I-44/I-49 and on Prigmor Road (County Road 190).
Those unable to attend can view an online public meeting which will include the same exhibits and those who view the online public meeting can send in questions via email. The online public meeting will be available beginning March 17 atwww.modot.org/southwest.
The interchange will be east of Exit 11 on I-44/I-49 (where I-49 splits off from I-44 and turns south toward Arkansas) and will provide direct access to the industrial park.
The $8.6 million project - known as the Crossroads Interchange - features a new bridge over the interstate, replacing the current one at Prigmor Avenue, with single-lane roundabouts at either end of the bridge.
Project Background:
Build interchange at Prigmor Avenue (Jasper County Road 190) over I-44/I-49 with ramps connecting to the interstate
Build roundabouts on each end of bridge over I-44/I-49 to connect ramps to Prigmor Avenue
Resurface and add two foot shoulders on Prigmor Avenue between new interchange and 7th Street (Route 66) to the north
Prime Contractor: Emery Sapp & Sons, Inc., Columbia
Total Project Cost: $8.6 million
Completion Date: November 1, 2015
Roundabouts are awesome. No useless waiting for a red light to change when there's no traffic coming, and no getting run into by people who can't figure out whose turn it is at a four-way stop.
ReplyDeleteThey need to change the driving test to include roundabout negotiation. It seems a majority of Joplin drivers simply do not understand how they work or maybe cannot read the signs...I'm not sure. As far as I know, parallel parking is still tested - and there's really no need to do that in Joplin (unless you want). It is getting increasingly harder to avoid the roundabouts in Joplin.
ReplyDeleteJoplin area drivers are not smart enough to negotiate a roundabout.
