C. J. Huff resigns

C. J. Huff is announcing his resignation during a press conference this morning.

The regular principals' meeting was moved up to this morning to give Huff the opportunity to make the announcement to them before the press conference.

\Reportedly, the Board of Education has reached an agreement with Huff to buy out the remainder of his contract, which was scheduled to run through 2018.

More information to come.

We are not stupid. His ass was fired, Otherwise they would not have reached an agreement to buy out his Anne Sharp golden parachute.

Is that any way to talk about the man who "singlehandedly" saved the Joplin School District following the tornado? You people should be talking about the statue of him and where you wish to place it.

You laugh and make jokes. But this effects more than you know. None of you could handle the pressure that Dr. Huff faces everyday. You all should be ashamed for beating a man while he is down. He has done good for Joplin and helped us through. You have no idea what he has been through. Selfish! Selfish! Selfish!

He will blame the BOE....maybe move to Texas with Wallace & Rohr? All messes we've been left to clean up. Leaving before the lawsuit where he evidently authorized overtures is convenient and frustrating. Now Joplin and thei BOE gets to figure out how to pay the (his) bills with no money and overstretched budget. Let's hope the BOE can figure out this fiasco.

You are correct. Most of us do not know what it's like to waste tax dollars and nickel and dime a school district. How dare we demand accountability.

6:49; I admire your dedication to the man. He has not "done good", he has not even done well. He has abused his position, but most importantly, he has abused our money. All in the name of making a name for himself. He has received his wish; he has made a name for himself;that name is "Former" Superintendent.

So, please, tell me what he has been through. The school district was not "saved" and the children are in no better condition. I am a former student of Joplin High School, graduated the day of the tornado, and the school did not meet accredidation for 2 years before I graduated and continues to not meet it. The tax payers money is going into numerous programs that don't actually help the students learn and my little sister is currently going through an issue with being passed through classes and grades despite her learning disability because the Special Education Teachers are making bonuses off of passing those students. There have been numerous examples of those students not taking standardized tests and being allowed to go on field trips to carousel park while the other students take the exams. Dr. Huff has been a fraud and refuses to acknowledge the true systemic issues inside of the school. Whether that be not paying the contractors that built the school, having more than $40 million dollars disappear outside of the budget, or robbing children of their education. This needs to end here. So, please, tell me what all C.J. Huff has been through and why we should grant him amnesty as the public? There are many other individuals that have done significantly more with significantly less. As a former student that went into college, even after graduating with honors and only taking advanced classes, I feel completely deprived of an education and feel completely let down by the system that I went through. I honestly hope that no other student has to go through the issues that I did. The time for change is now, and that means more transparency, more passion, and less side stepping the actual issues that are inside of public education.

"Our long, local nightmare is over."

I knew Huff was in his endgame here when the board became 3-2 against him, and others noted he was subdued during the last board meeting.

I wonder what happened in that closed session; did he decide he couldn't stand the heat and ask for an offer, did the new majority make him an offer he couldn't refuse (after a day or so of thought). Meh, we don't really need to know, the end result is the same.

Sad we have to pay his recently extended "Anne Sharp golden parachute", but as I've noted before, it won't take much of a housecleaning in headquarters to make many times that money back. Likely to be getting ugly over there, although one would hope many of them could see the writing on the wall.

They should not have bought out his contract. Now this terrible man can go and ruin another district. He should have been fired and that should have been a part of his permanent record. Joplin School board didn't do the next district any favors. He's not good enough for Joplin and he should never run a district again.

7:29, Sachetta was a pawn under the Huff regime. He oversaw the resignation of countless qualified, passionate teachers because they didn't fall in line with the doctrine. Intelligent as he may be, he has been found lacking in ethic and character.

  28. Anonymous7:59 AM

Wow, he's using the "spend more time with my family" canard, according to a press release as published by FOX 14, and spinning this as a "retirement".

Well, after failing to get a job elsewhere, as a school superintendent or anything else at that sort of level, and getting fired in all but name, yeah, like our host he just might be retiring, although if so I'd expect he'll need to downsize his reported lifestyle.

While the house-cleaning is in process, there's a few more who wouldn't cost buying out any contracts.

Huff came here with a clean slate and did some good work. It was his inability or unwillingness to rein in AB that started his slide. Then, with AB gone, he morphed into a micro-manager who manipulated the school board and became paranoid and just a touch delusional. It's a tragic tale. When he was a principal, his teachers adored him. His leadership right after the big storm was timely and decisive.
He made a bunch of mistakes after that, however, not the least of which was needlessly making a public spectacle over firing the author of this blog. After that, it was a slippery slope to resignation/retirement.
I still maintain that at his core, CJ is a good man with good intentions. Some of the people who are celebrating his departure would do well to learn a lesson in humility from his story. The higher you get on yourself - the more power you imagine yourself to possess - the harder the crash when reality strikes.

And, let's please not forget his cute little tricks to get his "friends" elected in certain positions over the last year or so...people who have horrible backgrounds & cared nothing for the children of Joplin. They're only concern was making a name for themselves & playing the political game. It was sickening to listen to the rhetoric, knowing it was nothing more than bs.
Good Riddance!!! I hope everyone associated with him gets the same "retirement" option!!

  33. I am sure he will enjoy 3 more years of pay for nothing, it adds up to around 530,000.

He was given a choice to resign or be fired. That's usually what they do to educators they want to get rid of. Given that choice, most decide to resign in hopes of being able to get another job.

9:59 AM: Excellent point. Huff may well "retire" to a grinding schedule of $8,000 speeches all over North America, and maybe he's quitting now to protect that income stream, or because he was not able to maintain the schedule with a board that actually excepts him to do his job.

The Globe has reported Koch reporting that the agreement will be published tomorrow, but even if he doesn't get much if any of a golden parachute it doesn't sound like he's going to be suffering. Especially if he saved enough from all the speeches he's previously given, and there's been no reports he's living wildly beyond his means.

As a former Joplin educator, this is truly a day to rejoice. Yes, there is a long road ahead and yes, there are few veteran educators left to walk that difficult road, but it can and will be accomplished. However, I have to disagree heartedly with the suggestion that Jason Cravens or Kerry Sachetta would make a good intern superintendent. They should not be considered for the position for the basic reason that no one, outside of administration, trusts them. They have sold out their integrity to the Almighty Dollar. They had a choice to make- honesty and integrity OR do whatever CJ Huff requested. Sadly, they sold out. The teachers, students, and parents of Joplin deserve a fresh start, a completely fresh start. Someone who has integrity and principles (if there are any with this rare combination) should be brought in. And, yes, the house needs to cleaned. The administration building is full of unqualified personnel that need to look elsewhere for employment. Building administrators need to go. There has been too much happen in the last few years to be forgotten or overlooked. And, please don't replace them with all the coaches and teachers that have "earned" on-line administration degrees.
Yes, it is time for a change, and Koch, Fort, and Martucci are the ones that are more than capable of ensuring that we are headed in the right direction. Thank you, Koch, Fort, and Martucci, for doing what should have been done years ago. Thank you for your courage and determination. Thank you for your willingness to serve in an unpaid and thankless job.

  46. Anonymous4:41 PM

As I see it, there is another problem that has to be addressed sooner rather than later, and that is the issue of the financial situation of the School District. Whether you like it or not, there must be another Bond Issue in Joplin's future. If that is not done soon, the District will face years of problems due to cutting corners on essential services and preventive maintenance. This will be the true legacy of your Superintendent and the Wise Folks of the School Board.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Anonymous6:00 PM

The district will be able to save a lot of money by getting rid of Bright Futures and eliminating all the overpaid and unnecessary administrators CJ has added. By firing Tina Smith and Mike Johnson the district won't just save money on their bloated salaries but the costs associated with lawsuits should go down considerably.

It's quite possible there will be another bond issue to get the district out of the gaping financial hole CJ created. If this BoE acts responsibly and demonstrates a willingness to cut the unnecessary spending, taxpayers would probably approve a reasonable increase. You might be surprised how quickly the school district starts to recover just by eliminating the waste.

@4:06 This needs to be a national search. No failed turds from big cities, a successful, young Super in a somewhat smaller district. One that has bounced back from financial difficulties....because those are coming. Though young, Huff was not successful in his previous endeavor but that didn't seem to matter to that Board. Henningson? I don't know if could get behind anyone that the clueless, elitist Carthage Commie, Lee ELIFF Pound likes. But that's just me. And I'm all kinds of f'd up lol

If he truly is retiring and his contract ran until 2018, then there is NO reason to buy his contract out. Unfortunately, the previous sitting board tied the hands of the existing board by giving CJ a long term
    contract.

If they are buying out his contract, then it was a behind the door deal where the current board told him retire and we will buy you out cause we don't want youu here anymore!

That's one off those CUT YOUR LOSSES while you still have the chance.
