Joplin R-8 board members have completed the first three out of 11 interviews they will conduct tonight for the board seat that opened with the resignation of former Joplin Police Chief Lane Roberts.
It is an old school evening for the board members, who do not have their laptops in front of them and are writing their notes on paper.
Despite the interest that has been generated in the board opening, only about a dozen people are in the audience.
The first three candidates interviewed were Ashley Micklethwaite, who was board president at the time of the Joplin Tornado, but resigned after her job required her to leave Joplin.
Micklethwaite indicated she was only interested in serving until next April and would not run for the remaining two years of the term at that time.
The second candidate, former McKinley Elementary teacher Mary Gaarder, indicated she was interested in running next April.
The third candidate, Empire District Electric company attorney Sharrock Dermott indicated he did not know what his plans were.
The board is asking its questions from a prepared list.
The fourth candidate, attorney Anne Wells, has just begun her interview.
