City of Joplin to offer first Citizens Academy

(From the City of Joplin)

The City of Joplin is hosting its first Citizens Academy this fall. Starting Thursday, September 3, the free nine-week course will offer Joplin residents and others an opportunity to interact with local officials, tour many of the City facilities and learn how to get involved in their civic community. During the various sessions, residents will learn about each department’s services and programs and provide a chance for them to ask department heads questions about these areas or other general questions.

Interested individuals should apply online at http://joplinmo.org/citizenapp. All applicants must be 18 years of age or older, residents of Joplin, business owners or those who work in Joplin. Preference will be given to Joplin residents. Applicants should be able to attend at least seven of the nine classes. Applications are due by August 3, and applicants will be notified of their acceptance following this date.

Class size is limited to 25 people so early registration is encouraged. Once the class is full, applicants will be placed on a waiting list. The City plans to host the Academy every fall, with the possibility of adding a class in the spring.

The Citizens Academy will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursdays, beginning September 3 and continue through October 29. The group will meet on Monday, September 14, instead of Thursday, September 16, so class members can attend the first night of City Council’s Budget Work Sessions with the Finance Department and other department leaders.

Classes will generally be held at City Hall, with some sessions including tours of other City facilities. The City will provide transportation to the facilities for the tours.

More information about the Academy is available by clicking the link below or contact Brian Kelly, Assistant to the City Manager, at 417-624-0820, ext. 203.
