Congresswoman Vicky Hartzler (R-Mo.) today voted to replace the No Child Left Behind Act with legislation reducing the federal footprint on education and restoring local control. The Student Success Act, with its focus on local control, empowers parents and educational professionals to hold schools accountable.
“As a former teacher, I know the importance of every schoolchild having access to a quality education,” Hartzler said. “Unfortunately, top-down policies like No Child Left Behind have fallen short of delivering on this goal. The Student Success Act works to reverse the trends that have been set with these one-size-fits-all policies by understanding that every child is unique and returning control of education to those who know the children best—parents and local education professionals.”
“This bill effectively reduces the federal footprint in our kids’ education system and restores local control,” Hartzler continued. “Through repeal of ineffective federal requirements on things such as spending, high-stakes testing, and teacher quality, states and local school districts are unleashed, allowing them to address the unique needs of their students. Furthermore, parents will be empowered with the meaningful information they need to hold schools accountable, ensuring their tax dollars go towards a solid, lasting education for their children. This bill is a strong step in the right direction towards making sure students of all levels are able to learn as they need to, not as Washington bureaucrats dictate.”
