Neosho, Mo - Genevieve Williams, a 27 year old small business owner formally announced her campaign for Seventh District Congress today. This will be her second campaign for the office.
Williams was the first to file for the Democratic Nomination in 2014 and was later challenged and defeated by second time candidate Jim Evans. Williams nearly overcame Evans at the polls, losing by only 1,200 votes, winning 6 out of 11 counties. After the primary, Genevieve went to work in the Evans campaign running the social media accounts and directing the ground campaign in Jasper and Newton Counties.
Genevieve Williams has six years in New Media and Advertising as a small business owner and 2 years in Economic Development. She is the co-creator of the Disaster Info Model, a web-based model for coordination of resources after a large-scale natural disaster. The model began in Joplin and is now used internationally to coordinate citizen and official response to disasters.
After her work in Joplin, Williams collaborated with others involved in the effort to compile a resource guide to share with other communities dealing with natural disasters. This guide is now presented by countless organizations ranging from government offices to public universities as a template for community outreach and engagement before, during, and after catastrophic events. She also assists communities in setting up these hubs, both speaking at emergency management conferences and working with the communities themselves. Her work is cited by scholars in crisis communications and is used as course material in several crisis communications programs. She has spoken about what she learned in Joplin and subsequent implementation of the Disaster Info Model in front of both the National Institute of Health and the National Hazard Mitigation Association.
Williams is the Chairwoman of the Newton County Central Democratic Committee and the female delegate to the Missouri Democratic Party from the 32nd Senatorial District. She is also the 5th Vice President of the Missouri Federated Democratic Women’s Club and Chair of Membership for the group.
Williams studied Alternative Energy at the MARET Center Crowder College in Neosho where
she participated in three US Department of Energy Solar Decathlons and the American Solar
Challenge, Williams continues her studies at Missouri State University in between campaigns.
Genevieve is a proud citizen of the Chickasaw Nation and is a direct descendant of Chickasaw Governor Winchester Colbert. Genevieve is a lifelong resident of the 7th District and a 7th generation Missourian.
Williams will be hosting a public Campaign Kick-Off Event at 5:00 P.M. on November 22nd at JB’s Event Center, 112 S. Main St. in Joplin.
