Man shot by Joplin Police on probation less than halfway through six-year sentence

Online court records indicate the man who was shot by a Joplin Police officer during a call responding to a domestic assault report Monday night was placed on probation only two years into his six-year sentence for multiple felonies.

Judge Gayle Crane sentenced Jeffrey Lee Hill, 49, Joplin, to six years in prison May 13, 2013, after Hill entered an Alford plea to a charge of stealing firearms. (An Alford plea means the defendant does not admit guilt, but acknowledges there is enough evidence to convict him.)The sentence was to run concurrently with the four-year sentence Crane had handed Hill for a felony driving while intoxicated as an aggravated offender charge.

On March 5, 2013, Judge Joseph Schoeberl sentenced Hill to 14 days in the Jasper County Jail, a $200 fine, and $141.50 in court costs for possession of marijuana and driving while revoked. Court records indicate another charge was dropped as part of a plea agreement.

A Joplin Police Department news release described what happened when the police arrived at the Oxford Apartments:

On November 30, 2015, at 9:16 PM, the Joplin Police Department responded to 3330 S. Texas, Oxford Apartments, in reference to a domestic assault.

The suspect had fled the scene prior to the arrival of officers. Officers were again called to this location at 10:37 PM in reference to a disturbance.

Upon arrival, officers were confronted with the same suspect from the earlier event and one officer was involved in a shooting.

The suspect sustained gunshot injuries and was transported by ambulance to Freeman Hospital where he continues to receive medical treatment. No officers were injured in this incident.

Following JPD policy for officer-involved shootings, the officers who responded to the call have been placed on administrative leave.

Though the Joplin Police Department recently received body cameras, the camera for the officer who shot Hill had not yet been activated, according to a department news release.
