In an article detailing how our politicians are raising money, Politico reporter Isaac Arnsdorf notes that Seventh District Congressman Billy Long, who seems to spend as much time in Las Vegas as he does in Springfield or Washington, D. C., raised money for his re-election by using one of his favorite hobbies:
Rep. Derek Kilmer (D-Wash.) packed a theater at $500 per head for a special Gallery Place screening of the new “Star Wars” sequel. Mario Diaz-Balart (R-Fla.) asked for up to $5,000 to be a host at a cigar-themed fundraiser at the office of the Keelen Group, a lobbying firm. Rep. Billy Long (R-Mo.) had a $1,000-per-person poker night, and three Michigan Republicans — Bill Huizenga, Fred Upton and Tim Walberg — and Democrat Dan Kildee gathered donors paying various amounts to watch the Detroit Red Wings lose to the Capitals at the Verizon Center.
The article did not mention where Long's fundraiser took place.
I remember the heady days when our Representatives actually did things to benefit the people of Southwest Missouri. Congressmen such as Dewey Short and Charlie Brown actually brought economic improvement to the area. Roy Blunt's claim to fame was the continuous circuit of Washington cocktail parties and his new wife's lobbying position and now, Billy Long spends all his time playing poker in Las Vegas. And yet, the people here simply do not seem to want a "real" Representative but will, instead, settle for the sham this office has become.
ReplyDeleteIt is hard to find anything good about no-neck Billy and his antics. He is exactly what the people of SW MO deserve since they do not care about the facts only vote the party line that tells them exactly what they want to hear. Drink the Kool-Aid and enjoy your low paying jobs that will be loss due to jobs shipped overseas, bad environment that will not lure business and under educated children that cannot add, subtract, multiply or divide except to have too many children. They whine about Hispanics and yet will not do the same job as well if they do work at the same place. Full speed ahead and just keep your eye on the lemming in front of you, they know the way to the sea.
