Reader offers suggestions on Jasper County Juvenile Detention Center

I received the following e-mail from a reader who offers suggestions on alternatives the Jasper County Commission could choose instead of the current quarter-cent sales tax proposal for a new Juvenile Detention Center.

I live outside of Jasper County, but it seems your commissioners are not thinking correctly on a new center. They want to build something and so who is going to get this contract for a large sum of money? It seems only logical that the old Library in Joplin could be utilized as it is close to courthouse and a pretty good building with a basement and open area for the kids.

Next suggestion is to get the old MODOT building out on 32nd street. It is very large and if I am not mistaken MODOT expressed a desire to sell it. It has three floors so the kids could be kept upstairs safely. It has a large grassy area for recreation, a pond and even a goose population. The building is also large enough to house the juvenile court, offices for the juvenile officers and could be renovated at a reasonable cost as most floors were open with cubicles. It would provide meeting rooms for educational activities, meeting rooms for parents or visitors, provide places where professional meetings could occur and in all just a good fit. Put all the attending duties to protect the kids in one area where their needs could be fully met.

I would also suggest using solar or wind energy during a retrofit to any future county upgrades of their buildings. Got to lead the way for the citizens to look at their leaders as being true leaders.

Why don’t these people see the advantages of these alternative building sites? Just my thoughts.

I heard Ozark Center is going to buy the Hwy Dept Building.

I concur--look at alternative sites and structures. I am of mixed feelings as this facility for juvenile offenders will be more current and up to date than some school buildings in our area.

These kids deserve very basic accommodations. They are there for a reason.

Here is the deal, its more than just about a building. There is the cost of having to install security cameras, cells, classrooms, rec areas, kitchen, offices, program areas and etc. If we build it will have to be built to specific requirements. The majority of people have no idea what goes on inside a juvenile center so they have no clue as to what is needed.

Using existing buildings is a good idea. I don't know that the library fits the bill. The MODOT building has been purchased by Ozark Center.
Any existing building will require major renovations.
I don't want any sales tax.
We do need a new juvenile facility.
    There are no easy answers.
