When Carlos Hailey, a candidate for the one-year term on the Joplin R-8 Board of Education, describes what he wants to see in a new superintendent, it is clear he is talking about someone different than the man who led the district between 2008 and 2015.
"We need a strong leader," Hailey told KZRG during an interview last week, "someone who is not afraid to delegate and not afraid to have other strong leaders around him."
During the wide ranging inteview with Morning News Watch host Chad Elliot, Hailey offered the following thoughts:
Technology- Technology is a positive thing, but if there is too much of it, it's a deterrent. You can't just set a kid in front of a computer and say, "You're now smarter."
Improving the School District- It is unacceptable that Joplin Schools, of all surrounding school districts, are pulling the bottom. We ought to be setting the bar and the bar should be really high for our students.
Teacher Retention and Morale- It's getting better. Things are improving. Hailey said the district needs to work harder to retain teachers, especially the best ones and determine how to improve others or to find replacements for them.

Technology...is he saying this is happening? How would he know? Based on what? Is this taking place in every building in the district? Are Joplin teachers this inept that this is how they teach kids? I bet not.
"Pulling the bottom"...? In which area? Academic performance? Salaries? Teacher performance? Admin performance? Athletics? Be specific. Offer ideas for solution.
Teacher retention and morale? Getting better? Based on.....? Did you survey the teachers? I don't think there has been all that much improvement...maybe a small amount.
Ask Springfield....anyone around Springfield what they thought of Ridder. Vast majority were thrilled to see good ol Nirm hit the road. Funny what a change of address can do.
