Musser: Salaries must increase for teachers, support staff

At one time, Joplin R-8 Board of Education candidate Lori Musser told KZRG last week, R-8 staff members were paid nearly top dollar for this area, but that is not the case now.

"Teacher retention has been a problem," Musser said, noting that teachers are leaving Joplin and going to other school districts.

"We don't pay our teachers well. We used to be at the top," she said, adding that where Joplin is at now is "a little bit embarrassing.

"And it's not just teachers, but our support staff."

Asked by Morning News Watch host Chad Elliot why the change in the way the teachers and support staff have been paid, Musser diplomatically answered, "The dollars went to other items,"

Musser did not criticize the C. J. Huff administration or former school boards, but noted that things seem to be moving in the right direction.

"Teachers seem to be happier."

Musser and Joe Brown are running for a two-year seat.
