Greitens to veterans: Our country thanks you and needs you

(From Governor-elect Eric Greitens)

Today is Veterans Day. It's a day to remember and reflect on the service and sacrifice of all those who have served our country.

We remember those who are in harm's way at this moment. Today, pause to think about those who are serving now, protecting our freedoms and our way of life. We remember those who gave their lives in the service of their country—gave what Abraham Lincoln called the "last full measure of devotion." There are families today who grieve for lost loved ones. Let us honor their spirit and sacrifice, always.

We remember also those who returned home from war changed, and possibly wounded, because of their service. We must commit ourselves to supporting those men and women. When I ran for Governor, I pledged to make Missouri the best state in the country for veterans. That is a mission we intend to complete, but it will take each and every one of us to make sure that our returning warriors come home, build full lives, and continue to serve their communities. We must have the backs of those who put their lives on the line for us.

So how can you advance that mission today? First, thank a veteran for their service. Second, commit to volunteering for a local veterans-service organization. There are many groups that help veterans with their transition home. Those organizations depend on volunteer service. You have the opportunity--today--to give back to the men and women who gave so much to our country. Third, you can live your life in a way that honors the values that veterans live by: service, sacrifice, duty, country.

And to my fellow veterans: Today is a day of thanks for what you have given, but please never forget that this country thanks you and needs you. We need your courage. We need your ability. We need your resolve. We need you to serve again, here at home. Thank you for your service to this great country.
