Joplin can breathe a sigh of relief; Vernon County takes Springfield prisoners

The city of Springfield finally found someone to take care of its prisoners.

Locked out of the Greene County Jail, Springfield has been looking for a facility to handle its prisoners.

The Joplin City Council rejected Springfield's offer to pay $50 per day per prisoner when Springfield would only agree to bring the prisoners here, but not to take them back to Springfield when they have served their time.

There was a fear that the former prisoners would stay in Joplin after their release.

Springfield City Council approved a contract with Vernon County tonight to begin January 2. The Vernon County Sheriff's Office will provide transportation to and from Springfield. Springfield will pay Vernon County $40 per prisoner per day.
