State audit of Barton County has begun

(From State Auditor Nicole Galloway)

Missouri State Auditor Nicole Galloway has announced her office has begun a regularly scheduled audit of the government of Barton County, located in Southwest Missouri. The county's most recent audit was released in January of 2013, and received an overall performance rating of poor.

"After the most recent audit county officials committed to making improvements to benefit the citizens of the Barton County," Auditor Galloway said. "This audit will review past findings and look for new areas for improvement. I encourage anyone that would like to provide information to contact our Whistleblower Hotline, where you can share confidential information related to the county and its operations."

In 2013, auditors recommended changes to the property tax system. Access to the system was not adequately restricted among county employees and property tax reduction amounts were not accurately calculated due in part to mathematical error within the county clerk's office.

These and other issues will be reviewed during the current audit. Individuals with information for consideration in the Barton County audit may contact the State Auditor's Whistleblower Hotline at moaudit@auditor.mo.gov or 800-347-8597.
