McCaskill: Don't let the GOP gut our health care

(From Sen. Claire McCaskill)

Last week, Republicans in the Senate set the ball rolling on their plan to strip health coverage from millions of Americans, and it wasn’t pretty.

Here’s some of what they voted to cut:

*Keeping coverage for people with preexisting conditions
*Letting young adults stay on their parents’ plans
*Keeping contraceptive coverage

And what have they got as a replacement? Zilch, nada, a whole lot of nothing. It’s absolutely unbelievable.

With health coverage for 30 million Americans – and protections for all Americans against industry abuses – on the line, we can’t let the GOP throw our healthcare system into chaos. I’m fighting back, but I need you to add your voice: Tell Republicans not to rip away Americans’ healthcare!
Tell the GOP: Don't gut our healthcare. Add your name.
Click here to tell the GOP: Don’t gut our healthcare.
We can’t beat around the bush here: The Republicans’ crusade against our healthcare is dangerous.

If they get their way, they’ll double the number of uninsured Americans, reopen the prescription drug “donut hole” for seniors and take us back to the days when you could be denied care because you’ve been sick before.

We should be working together to find commonsense solutions, not throwing our healthcare system into chaos and leaving millions without access to lifesaving care. I need you to stand with me: Sign your name to tell Republicans not to gut our healthcare!

So does Roy Blunt, they all should be under the same program as other citizens!

Congress and their staffers were forced to give up their insurance and buy on the exchanges just like folks who lack employer based insurance. This fact means that they are not currently covered in the same way most other Americans are - via their employers - so the person who thinks they need to be under the same program as other systems is probably right, but not for the reason they are suggesting. They had to give up their employer-based insurance because the usual suspects tried to use this line to gin up resistance to the Affordabale Care Act (ACA) (which, incidentally, is Obamacare - which some people don't seem to know). Of course, if Obamacare is repealed, congressmen and women won't be hurting like lots of folks in the individual market (as opposed to the employer based group market) who got their coverage thanks to Obamacare. Trying to revive the myth that Congress inflicted something on us that didn't involve them is just silly - and very out of date.

Congress and congressional staff have to get their insurance on the exchange - this was added as an amendment to the Affordable Care Act (ACA) a.k.a. Obamacare. They are not covered in the same way as other citizens since most Americans get their insurance via their employers, but this change was made to forestall exactly the type of criticism some here are implying. It's not likely, though, that if the ACA is repealed, that members of congress will be hurt as badly as others who have to buy insurance on the individual market (as opposed to the employer-based group market).

The GOP is apparently ready to gut everything.

Report: Trump Team Wants to Slash Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and Everything Else Except Defense Kevin Drum Jan. 19, 2017 1:39 PM

"Here's the latest news on squeezing our bloated government down to size:

Donald Trump is ready to take an ax to government spending. Staffers for the Trump transition team have been meeting with career staff at the White House ahead of Friday’s presidential inauguration to outline their plans for shrinking the federal bureaucracy, The Hill has learned....Overall, the blueprint being used by Trump’s team would reduce federal spending by $10.5 trillion over 10 years."

Add your name to tell the GOP not to take Americans’ healthcare!

When will Democrats learn? The time to "click here" and "add your name" was in November.
