Leggett & Platt lays off half of workforce at Kentucky plant

Carthage-based Leggett & Platt is laying off 180 employees, half of the workforce at its Georgetown, Kentucky adjustable bed plant, according to an article in the Georgetown News-Graphic.

The layoffs will take effect by the end of March, according to the company.


“The business cycle is wonderful when everything is going up,” said David Johnson, senior employee relations representative. “It is horrendous when it is going down, and unfortunately that is where we are now.”

The affected employees will be primarily production workers such as assemblers, welders and painters. In accordance with the federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN), the affected employees will receive 60 days pay and benefits from the date they receive formal notice.
