Twelve Joplin residents under quarantine, one in isolation following latest COVID-19 case

A dozen Joplin residents are under quarantine following the latest confirmed COVID-19 cases over the weekend.

During the weekly city news conference this morning, Joplin Health Department Director Dan Pekarek said one person is under isolation.

Missouri state statistics released this afternoon by the Department of Health and Senior Services show the city has had 13 cases.

Joplin R-8 Superintendent Melinda Moss said the fall semester start date has been rescheduled to August 13, following a public hearing and action Tuesday night at the Board of Education meeting.

The earlier start date is designed to help the students to catch up on what they missed due to the pandemic. It also builds extra time into the calendar unless any time is missed due to recurrences of the virus, Moss said.

She acknowledged that recommended social distancing will not always be possible in a school setting, but stressed that she is working with the Health Department and professional sources to make the environment as safe as possible for the students.
