Carthage City Council approved a mask ordinance Wednesday by a 6-4 margin, but that vote went for naught when Mayor Dan Rife vetoed the measure.
Those voting for the measure were council members David Armstrong, Mike Daugherty, James Harrison, Ceri Otero, Seth Thompson and Juan Topete.
Voting against it were council members Ed Barlow, Craig Diggs, Alan Snow and Raymond West.
From KOAM's coverage:
“I think it’s an overstep. I don’t feel like the city needs to be the one mandating that the masks be worn. We’ve requested it. It’s up to the businesses to make their own rules for their own business,” said Carthage Mayor Dan Rife.
The council can still override Rife's vote, but it would take seven votes to do so.
The ordinance, which would have gone into effect immediately, was put on the council agenda following requests by officials from area hospitals and medical professionals and the continuing number of residents contracting and being hospitalized from the coronavirus.

Leadership, how does it work?
I think it’s an overstep. I don’t feel like the city needs to be the one mandating that the traffic laws be followed. We’ve requested it. We thought about setting speed limits and having stop signs. It’s up to the drivers and citizens to make their own rules for their own cars and streets.
Some people want government to make and enforce rules. Other people like having their freedum and doing what they want. After all, Jesus could take the wheel anytime you are driving, especially when you are driving too fast for road and weather conditions.
Having traffic laws probably doesn't change that, as much as some people would like you to think it might.
The thing about leadership that most people don't get is that sometimes a leader just has to stick his head in the sand and hope for the best because it's too hard to figure some things out. Also you can't please everyone so why even try?
This is leadership. Liberty over fear. It's funny that when I read the Constitution, I have never noticed an asterisk at the bottom stating that, "This document null and void in case of virus with a 99% survivability rate".
It's funny that when I read the Constitution, I have never noticed any mention of the Titanic. There is not an asterisk at the bottom stating that "This document null and void in case of ice bergs in ocean that is 99% iceberg free".
Just a tremendous editorial cartoon in the @WinnipegNews

Everybody is on their own. Wear a mask or don't wear one.
I finally got Covid a couple weeks ago. I have been wearing a mask and social distancing since about January. It finally caught up with me.
Best wishes to all of you. It isn't a fun thing to catch.
4:28, best wishes to you, my friend. I hope you have recovered or are recovering without a lot of suffering and without any long-term effects. If everyone were as responsible as you have been throughout this ordeal, I'm sure we wouldn't be where we are now. Someone spread the virus to you. That's what those who refuse to wear masks and social distance either don't understand, or they simply don't care about anyone but themselves. Personal freedom doesn't mean being free to do anything you want if it endangers other people. That's something else they don't understand. Since the mayor and other "leaders" like him won't act in the best interests of their communities,we're on our own in trying to stay well while surrounded by those who are spreading this disease.

Absolutely, Liberty is best proven by not wearing a mask. Such individualism, stunning.
Fear? Wearing a mask has nothing to do with fear, it's called following science.
No, leadership is about leading above all odds.
For all the jingoism of rugged individualism, Amercians love to be told what to do.
Spoiled, entitled nation.
