Unless I am misreading the City of Joplin's COVID-19 dashboard, the Globe's bulletin today claiming there are 103 coronavirus patients in Mercy, Freeman and Landmark hospitals as of Friday, is incorrect.
The number should be 80, which is still high, but less than the 83 that was posted a couple of weeks ago.
The statistics on all of these COVID-19 dashboard can often be confusing and I have screwed up on them a couple of times, though I have always made an effort to quickly correct my mistakes whenever I or one of you come across one.
This was what the city's dashboard had that caused the confusion:
Hospitalization InfoJoplin Residents Hospitalized: 23
This number reflects to number of Joplin residents who are confirmed COVID-19 cases and are currently admitted for treatment in a hospital
Joplin Hospital Occupancy: 80
This number reflects the number of COVID-19 patients currently admitted in Joplin hospital systems (Freeman, Landmark, and Mercy) and includes residents outside of Joplin City limits
That would indicate there are 80, not 103 COVID-19 patients in city hospitals and 23 Joplin residents have been hospitalized for the virus and are likely included among the 80 patients.
The Globe statistics also note 17 new cases bringing the city's total to 2,563.
Joplin has recorded 37 deaths due to COVID-19.
