You have to look long and hard in this area for any profiles in courage among our elected leaders.
They seem to rarely move to the front of the room unless somebody needs a TIF district and is dangling the lure of hundreds of low-paying jobs.
But it would be unfair to count Joplin Mayor Ryan Stanley among that number.
He is perfectly willing to be a profile in courage- and he will do it as soon as everyone else does.
Stanley has shown a willingness to examine both sides of an issue.
When the Joplin City Council first voted on a mask ordinance June 24, Stanley, joined by Gary Shaw, Phil Stinnett, Doug Lawson and Chuck Copple, voted it down. (Council members Keenan Cortez, Diane Reid Adams, Anthony Monteleone and Christina Williams supported the measure.)
At that point, Stanley said such an ordinance would be a burden on law enforcement.
On July 8, Stanley and Copple joined Cortez, Adams, Monteleone and Williams and a mask ordinance was approved.
The mask ordinance worked, so naturally when it came time to decide whether to renew it, Stanley changed his mind.
During the Monday, August 17 council meeting, Stanley delivered an impassioned soliloquy, along the lines of "to mask or not to mask, that is the question." By the time he finished delivering the lengthy explanation of his vote, city residents had nearly forgotten the question.
In a letter to the Joplin Globe this week, Stanley indicated his willingness to change his mind again- but he is not going to do it alone.
COVID-19 is a regional health crisis. It needs to be addressed with a regional response. Over the past few weeks, I have visited with the executive leadership of Freeman Health System, Mercy Hospital Joplin and the Kansas City University, Joplin. I have had many candid conversations with Joplin's health director and former health director. All have expressed concern over our growing number of cases, our increased level of hospitalizations and the holiday season that is upon us.
Having the ordinance is only the first step. Enforcement is the second. It shouldn't be put upon businesses to do it themselves. Their employees are not trained to be security, and for the confrontations it might bring. Yet hiring a lot of new police officers is not an economical answer, and having cops stop people on the street for not wearing masks will turn people against the ordinance. The stores that mandate masks should put some teeth into that policy. Hire bar bouncers to keep anti-maskers out, or change the policy to say masks are recommended, not required. It's pathetic and foolish to have a policy and not live by it.
ReplyDeleteIf stores would start by refusing to sell anything to customers who refuse to wear masks, we might get a start on this? Maybe? Couldn't hurt to try?
ReplyDeleteThe gist of the article is that Mayor Stanley has failed to lead, changed his position on the issue depending on whom is speaking to, and is avoiding responsibility by claiming it to be a “regional” issue as opposed to doing the right thing for the benefit of the citizens of Joplin. He fears business going to smaller communities, and is not concerned with the death of citizens in Joplin, if those communities fail to enforce an ordinance.

ReplyDeleteWAKE UP JOPLIN!!!
ReplyDeleteOther Cities have Mask Ordinances - Springfield, Kansas City, and now St. Louis. Why cannot the So-Called Leaders of Joplin Area - Realize that this is needed to Protect the Overall Citizens of their Communities - - This is not about Republican or Democrat or Taking away your Rights, but about Health Issues - - This is a Pandemic - - and if some of the Citizens are to To Stupid to Recognize this then it is upto the Leaders of the Community to Protect the Masses not the Few... We have Laws and Rules and Regulations that we all must Follow - - you have to Wear Seat Belts, No More Smoking in Public Places - Such as Restaurants - - The Medical and FrontLine Workers - - are Speaking Up - - WHY WON'T THE MAYORS AND CITY COUNCILS OF THESE COMMUNITIES - DO THE RIGHT THING???
NO ONE SHOULD HAVE TO PUT THEMSELVES, THEIR FAMILIES, OR FRIENDS AT RISK - BECAUSE A FEW IGNORANT INDIVIDUALS - - DO NOT WANT TO WEAR MASKS INTO STORES OR OTHER PUBLIC PLACES - BECAUSE THEY FEEL THAT THEIR RIGHTS ARE BEING VIOLATED OR STEPPED UPON - - AND TO THOSE THAT FEEL THAT MASKS WILL NOT STOP THE SPREAD OF COVID-19 - IT IS THE BEST THING WE HAVE AT THIS TIME - - AGAIN, WHY DO YOU THINK MEDICAL PEOPLE HAVE BEEN WEARING MASKS SINCE THAT LATE 19TH CENTURY - TO HELP CURB THE SPREAD OF GERMS - - IF YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND THAT - "READ THAT LAST SENTENCE AGAIN" - -
WAKE UP JOPLIN!!!
