(From Southern News Service)Missouri Southern State University has made a change in the leadership of its football program. Director of Athletics Jared Bruggeman announced today that Jeff Sims, head football coach, has been relieved of his duties.
Joe Bettasso, linebacker coach, will serve as interim head coach through the upcoming spring football season, which begins in February.
“We have every confidence in Coach Bettasso that he will be committed to growing a successful program, leading with integrity, and putting our student-athletes first,” said Bruggeman.
“Bettasso has served as interim head coach before and we feel he is the right person to step in as we search for a new leader for Southern football.”
Missouri Southern President Dean Van Galen and Bruggeman will meet with football student-athletes, this week, regarding the change.
A national search will begin soon.
“We will be looking for someone who has built a winning program, is high-energy, and has strong organizational skills," said Bruggeman. “A healthy athletics program is vital to the college experience and we are looking forward to the upward momentum of the program for all of our Lion community.”

No player deaths on or off the field will be considered a plus this time?

Does coach Sims think his firing was an act of god?
ReplyDeleteWow - that was a shock. MSSU should give strong consideration to Tim Beck - the former Pitt State football coach. Tim knows the recruiting area and MIAA. Tim had a good record at Pitt State - he was fired when he had a "down" year.
ReplyDeleteAll the money put into this football program and they've had 1 win.
ReplyDeleteDo they ever recruit from around here where there are many winning high school teams?
For decades, the football team has been a joke. Lots of wasted money in this area while other programs are neglected. I'm not against sports but they shouldn't be the only thing receiving funding.
Can anyone spill the tea on what happened? MSSU is in so much chaos lately.
ReplyDelete@1:53 Beck liked the bottle a little too much. He also liked driving after hitting the bottle, as well. That's why he was fired from Pitt. Had NOTHING to do with anything on the field.
ReplyDelete@8:42 from @1:53 - thank you for the info!!!
ReplyDelete@8:42 I think you are thinking of Broyles. He is the one who was really successful and was their coach before Beck. Beck did good, but the team was declining slowly each year u der his leadership.
ReplyDeleteI have lived in Joplin area about 15 years and this will be the 6th head coach in that time.
Ware, Tatum,Daye, Johnson, Simms and now whoever they hire. I think they have only had 3 winning seasons during that same time period.
I think there are more problems there than the coach.
