R-8 Board expected to hire Pliler as Stapleton Elementary Principal, approve Secrist retirement

The Joplin R-8 Board is expected to approve the hiring of Kasey Pliler as Stapleton Elementary principal when it meets 5 p.m. Thursday in the Memorial Education Building.

Pliler, who is currently assistant principal at South Middle School, will replace Karen Secrist, who is retiring at the end of the current school year.

The board is also scheduled to approve Secrist's retirement during the closed session.

Secrist has been in the R-8 School District for 24 years, including the last eight as Stapleton Elementary principal.

She previously served as an instructional coach in the district and taught at Eastmorland and Duquesne elementary schools.

  1. Mrs. Secrist has served the Joplin School District for 30 years, not 24. Her teaching career in total is 33 years. Her duty as an assistant principal should also not go unnoticed. Mrs. Secrist has shaped the lives and minds of thousands of children of the years and there will never be anyone like her. Her years and duties should be properly and professionally acknowledged. Thank you
