Whitehead, Cox chosen for Carthage R-9 administrative posts

The Carthage R-9 Board of Education voted to hire two new administrators for the 2021-2022 school year during the April Board of Education meeting. Flint Whitehead was named Carthage High School Assistant Principal and Don Cox was named Pleasant Valley Elementary Principal / Title 1 Coordinator.

Flint Whitehead has served as a Social Studies teacher and coach at Carthage High School since 2014. Before assuming the role of Assistant Principal, he was the Career Resource Educator at the Carthage Technical Center.

Mr. Whitehead is replacing Angela Holman, who is taking the role of High School Principal for the Carthage R-9 School District next school year.

“The community of Carthage is truly special and I am honored to have been chosen for the Assistant Principal at Carthage High School. I am eager to start the school year with the amazing team of faculty at the high school to continue helping our students achieve success,” says Mr. Whitehead. “I’ve been very fortunate to work with, and learn from, excellent administrators during my time in education and hope to follow the example of excellence they have set.”

Mr. Whitehead graduated from Missouri Southern State University with a Bachelor of Science Education/Social Studies in 2011.

Don Cox is replacing current Pleasant Valley Elementary Principal Melony Houlihan, who will be retiring at the end of the 2020-2021 school year. Mr. Cox has ten years of experience in education, having taught 5th grade math and science for seven years in Carthage, and has served as the Elementary Principal for the Greenfield R-4 School District the last three years.

Says Cox, “My family and I are excited and honored for the blessing to return back to the Carthage School District. I look forward to getting to know all the parents, students and staff. I am grateful for the opportunity to continue the excellence in education in the Carthage School District.”

Mr. Cox graduated with a Master’s degree in Education Administration from Missouri State University in 2015.

District Superintendent Dr. Mark Baker says, “Mr. Whitehead has proven himself as a great educator. We are excited to have him join our administrative team. Mr. Cox returning to Carthage is great for our students and staff. His prior experience teaching in Carthage provides him an understanding what it is like to be a Tiger.”
