In the course of robbing a Springfield woman's home on February 5, 2015, two men not only stole between $600 and $700, including the woman's tax refund, but one of them savagely beat her.
The probable cause statement detailed the nightmarish evening.
(She) said she had been asleep in her bedroom since around 1900 hours and was awoken by a male pulling her off her bed and asking her, "Where is the money?"
She told them her money was in the closet. The men dragged her into another room and put her in a chair.
One of them told the other, "Don't hit her," as he left to get his truck to back it up.
When he left, his partner "picked up a glass ash tray and struck (her) twice on the left side of her head, then picked up a white belt that was on the floor and struck her arms and legs with it.
She said the suspect appeared that he was "enjoying beating her."
The suspect who appeared to enjoy beating a helpless woman, Kalen Barclay (shown in a 2016 Greene County Jail booking photo), was charged by the Greene County Prosecuting Attorney's office with first degree robbery, first degree burglary and kidnapping.
At the time, Barclay committed the crime he was already on probation in Christian County where he was given a suspended sentence after a first degree burglary charge was plea bargained to second degree and ordered to spend four days in jail.
Between the time Barclay committed the Christian County burglary and his sentencing in the Greene County case, he was cited for probation violations seven times, but was never sent to prison.
On April 4, 2016 under a plea agreement with the Greene County Prosecuting Attorney, Barclay pleaded guilty to first degree burglary with the robbery charged being downgraded to second degree and the kidnapping charge dismissed.
The judge sentenced Barclay to seven years in prison and his probation was revoked on the original charge.
How long Barclay remained in prison is unclear though Polk County Circuit Court records show a traffic citation in March 2020.
In a news release issued Sunday, the Greene County Sheriff's Office reported what is alleged to be Barclay's final crime.
Deputies arrived and found a vehicle on the on-ramp of State Highway PP, just south of I-44. The vehicle was occupied by a male and female, both deceased.
Greene County Detectives have identified the deceased and have made the appropriate notifications.
The investigation has concluded that Kalen Barclay, a 25-year-old male from Ozark, MO and Gabriella Broglio, a 27-year-old female from Joplin, MO were traveling in a vehicle in the area of I-44 and State Highway PP.
While the vehicle was stopped on the off ramp, Kalen shot Gabriella, killing her and then took his own life.
Another example of the system failing victims.
