Joplin R-8 officials considering changes in public participation at board meetings

The Joplin R-8 Board of Education's Policy Committee will consider changes to the current system through which members of the public can address the board during meetings when it meets 4:30 p.m. Monday in the superintendent's conference room in the Memorial Administration Building.

At the present time, people who wish to speak at the board meeting can do so as long as they sign up before the meeting.

If the policy revisions are adopted, those wishing to speak would have to sign up with the board secretary by 3 p.m. the day of the meeting.

The suggested revisions in the form speakers fill out would also completely eliminate anyone speaking about any items that are not on the agenda and listed as an "action item."

"If your selected topic for "public comment" is not an action item, we direct you to follow the other avenues for communication outlined in Policy BDDH for offering suggestions, addressing concerns and complaints."

Those methods, according to the proposed policy revision are "grievance through established policy and procedure" and "written correspondence."
