Victim in Joplin officer-involved shooting was involved in standoff with SWAT in 2014

Joseph Shane Endicott, 41, Carl Junction, who died as a result of an officer-involved shooting October 30 at 1523 S. Kentucky Avenue was involved in a standoff with Joplin Police Department's SWAT unit in 2014.

Endicott was shot to death after officers responded to a report of a disturbance involving a weapon at 1523 S. Kentucky Avenue, according to a JPD update issued Monday.

A female caller reported being assaulted by a male with a bat. During the call she identified the suspect as Shane Endicott. Officers arrived on scene shortly after the call was received and located an adult male in the bathroom of the home.

Officers attempted numerous times to get him to exit the room, but he refused. During the incident, the  male displayed a handgun which resulted in an exchange of gunfire between the male and three JPD police officers.

He did not survive the shooting.

At the time of the shooting, Endicott was also wanted on unrelated charges of 1st Degree Robbery and Vehicle Tampering. The officers involved in the shooting, Officer Pete Box, Officer Darrell Klink and Sgt. Jason Stump, were placed on paid administrative leave per department policy and procedure.

Endicott's earlier standoff with JPD officers was recounted in an October 10, 2014 news release:

At approximately 5:20 AM, officers with the Joplin Police Department received information that Joseph Shane Endicott was in a house located at 803 S. McKinley in Joplin. Mr. Endicott has a Federal Warrant from the US Marshal’s Service for escape from custody. The original charge on the case was for a weapons violation.

Officers attempted to make contact with Mr. Endicott but were unable to do so. The Joplin SWAT team was called to the residence to assist with the barricade. Around 8:00 AM this morning after the SWAT team arrived, two females exited the residence. The two females were known associates of Mr. Endicott.

The Joplin SWAT Team attempted to make contact with Mr. Endicott, but were unable to do so. At approximately 9:15 AM, negotiators were able to make contact with Mr. Endicott via phone. After talking with Mr. Endicott on the phone, he exited the residence and was taken into custody without any further incident. Mr. Endicott was transported to the Joplin City Jail where he remains in custody.

The US Marshal's Warrant has a full US Extradition and there is no bond on the warrant. The warrant indicated that Mr. Endicott is known to carry a firearm. Mr. Endicott was also involved in a shooting incident that had occurred in Lawrence County on October 3, 2014. The Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office has also issued warrants for two counts of First Degree Assault, Unlawful use of a Weapon, and Armed Criminal Action.

well it didn't take long for the copaganda to come out to make sure we all hate the victim enough that we dont question police tactics. I guess being a criminal douchebag in the past is a capital offense here. disgusting.

No one said anything about hate. Just publishing the facts.
And, the police were called to the residence for domestic.
Just because someone dies doesn't mean they are bad, but also, doesn't mean they were good.
I didn't know this person, so I have no judgement.
I do believe the police were just doing their job.
Thank you to JPD for protecting us when we call them for assistance. They do a great job. I am thankful for them.

  2. The Joplin Police Department news release made no mention of the 2014 incident. I found the information on a 2014 edition of this blog and thought it newsworthy that a man who died in an officer-involved shooting was involved in a standoff with the JPD seven years ago.
