Dr. Ron Mitchell, superintendent of the East Newton R-6 School District for the past six years, has been selected as the new superintendent of the Liberal R-2 School District.
Mitchell, a Liberal High School graduate, began his teaching career in Diamond and later served as principal at Diamond Middle School, Joplin South Middle School and was the first principal at Joplin East Middle School.
Mitchell is a graduate of Missouri Southern State University and received his educational specialist degree from Pittsburg State University and his doctoral degree from the University of Kansas.
“I am honored to be selected as the new superintendent of the Liberal School District,” said Dr. Mitchell.
“I am grateful to have this opportunity to serve the Liberal community and intend to make a profound, positive and long-lasting impact. With a “students first” mindset, I will work collaboratively to move the district in a positive direction and improve educational outcomes for all students. It is an honor for me to come back home."
Mitchell's new job will begin July 1.

Joplin lost this excellent employee along with many others during the Huff destruction period.
