Joplin man pleads guilty to making child pornography with 3 children for more than 5 years

A Joplin man pleaded guilty this morning in U. S. District Court in Springfield to three counts of sexually exploiting a child.

Judge David P. Rush ordered a pre-sentence investigation for Michael Schmitt, 64. No date has been scheduled for sentencing.

During the hearing, Schmitt admitted that he coerced three children "to engage in sexually explicit conduct for the purpose of producting a visual depiction of such conduct."

The crimes took place between October 20, 2015 and December 27, 2020, according to the indictment.

As part of a plea agreement, a fourth charge against Schmitt, sending and receiving child pornography during December 2020, was dismissed.
