Judge overrules motion to dismiss Newton County Auditor's lawsuit against County Assessor

A lawsuit filed by Newton County Auditor Matt Major against his former boss, County Assessor Cheryle Perkins will be allowed to continue.

During a January 27 motions hearing, Judge Joseph Schoeberl overruled the motion by Perkins' attorneys to dismiss the case.

Major's motion for a change of venue will be taken up during an 11 a.m. March 31 hearing in Newton County Circuit Court.

In his lawsuit, Major claims Perkins brought charges against him for crimes he did not commit and lied about him in an effort to sabotage his campaign and character.

After Major was successful in winning the Republican primary (no Democrats filed for the office) August 2, the charges against him were dismissed, only 11 days before the trial was scheduled to begin.
