An Aurora woman was arrested on a felony driving while intoxicated after she crossed the center line on MO 39 three miles north of Aurora 11:20 a.m. today and hit five motorcycles. Four people were pronounced dead at the scene, with eight others airlifted to Springfield hospitals.
The Manetzke vehicle traveled off the west side of the roadway and landed in a ditch. The five motorcycles overturned, ejecting all drivers and passengers with the Olmsted motorcycle catching fire.
Olmsted, Hale, a passenger on the Clinkingbeard vehicle, Linda G. Anderson, 61, Aurora, and a passenger on the Olmsted vehicle, a 17-year-old Aurora girl, were pronounced dead at the scene by Lawrence County Coroner Scott Lakin at 11:55 a.m.
Clinkingbeard was airlifted to Mercy Springfield with serious injuries.
Online Highway Patrol records indicate Manetzke, in addition to the DWI charge, was cited for driving on the wrong side of the roadway.
Online court records do not show any prior DWI convictions for Manetzke, though she pleaded guilty to "defective equipment' charges and possession of drug paraphernalia November 18, 2014, in Aurora Municipal Court and was fined $300 and to "defective equipment" August 8, 2013 in Billings Municipal Court and was fined $200.
The fatalities were the 46th, 47th, 48th and 49th this year for Highway Patrol Troop D.
Drunk drivers should receive many years in prison. If they take a life, minimum of 25 years. Why do we provide them with multiple chances to kill people, or kill more people?
