Joplin City Council to act on resolutions naming bridges after police officers who died in the line of duty


Joplin City Council will vote Monday night on resolutions naming three bridges after police officers Jake Reed, Ben Cooper and Timothy Nielson who were killed in the line of duty.

According to the resolutions, the bridge on 1200 E. 20th Street crossing over the Kansas City Southern Railroad would be the Jake Reed Memorial Bridge, with the bridge on Loop 44/Range Line Road over the Kansas City Southern Railroad being named the CPL Ben Cooper Memorial Bridge and the bridge on Connecticut Avenue over I-44 being named the Officer Timothy Nielson Memorial Bridge.



Reed and Cooper were killed in the line of duty as a result of gunshot wounds suffered March 8, 2022, with Cooper dying that day and Reed on the following day.

Nielson was killed in a house explosion on September 13, 2004.
