Traffic stop leads to Joplin man's arrest on DWI, meth charges

A Joplin man was charged with driving while intoxicated, possession of a controlled substance and driving while revoked following a traffic stop conducted this morning by the Jasper County Sheriff's Office.

An arrest was issued today and bond set at $5,000 cash or surety for Colttyn Nick Olson (DOB 1998), Joplin.

According to the probable cause statement, the traffic stop took place 6:33 a.m. today at Main Street and Norton Drive in Joplin after a deputy saw Olson hitting a curb and failing to stay in one lane.

As I approached the driver's side door, informing a white male driver, later identified as Colttyn Olson, who I was and why he was stopped, the odor of intoxication, slurred speech, and glossy and red eyes were noticed on Colttyn. 

I asked Colttyn to step out of the car, and as he did so, he was very unbalanced on his feet as he was holding onto the door for support. I asked Colttyn to perform SFSTs, which he refused to do. 

Colttyn was placed into handcuffs, and his person was searched. A small clear baggie of a white powdered substance was in his left pocket. Based on my training and experience, the white powdered substance is suspected to be methamphetamine. 

Colttyn refused to give his name, and while at the Jasper County Detention Center, he was identified and found to be a revoked driver out of Missouri. Colttyn was revoked for DWI and the effective date was 09-04-2023 and eligible for reinstatement on 09-24-2024. 

At the Detention Center, Colttyn was read Implied Consent at 0716 hours and refused to submit to a chemical test, and a 15-day driving permit was given to Colttyn as he also refused to sign it. While asking questions related to Implied Consent, Colttyn believed it to be 0200 hours in the morning and was leaving a wedding when contacted by law enforcement. Colttyn was sentenced to two years of probation in 2020 for DWI.
