Joplin Globe editor: I no longer believe we should make presidential endorsements


The Joplin Globe hasn't endorsed anyone for president since 2016, according to a column in today's paper by Editor Andy Ostmeyer, and it doesn't plan to do so this year.

I won't place a link to the article since it's behind a pay wall, but Ostmeyer reviews the Globe's checkered history of endorsing presidential candidates, which includes never endorsing Franklin D. Roosevelt and choosing Thomas Dewey over Harry S. Truman in 1948, and notes the Globe endorsements don't look so great in retrospect.







Oddly, Ostmeyer fails to mention what many of his readers think was the worst presidential endorsement- the Globe's 2008 stamp of approval for Barack Obama.

Sixteen years have passed since that editorial, but I still see people cursing the Globe for that endorsement and saying that was when they dropped their subscriptions. Others have said it was the beginning of the slow, torturous downfall of the newspaper, which in recent years has since a shrinking of its news coverage and coverage area, the loss of approximately 75 percent of its subscriptions, and its reduction of its reporting staff to a skeleton crew.

I don't agree with that assessment. While the Obama endorsement did cause some readers to drop their subscriptions, the Globe's problems began years before, with owners who made the decision to begin charging grieving families for obituaries, as well as charging for wedding announcements, engagements, anniversaries and birth announcements.







The Globe also suffered from the disease of chain ownership, which has dealt the death knell for many newspapers, including the Carthage Press. Instead of adding value to their product, chain ownership has consistently increased profit margin through cuts, something that inevitably weakens the product.

Getting back to presidential endorsements, if memory serves correctly, whether it was disappointment in President Obama's first four years or an aversion to losing more readers, the Globe reversed course in 2012 and endorsed Mitt Romney.

Ostmeyer's article says the Globe's final endorsement came in 2016.

Does anyone out there remember if the Globe endorsed Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton?

    I am firm believer in that I do Not believe that News Organization and Media Outlets should endorse Presidential Candidates. This shows biases and if any group should be neutral - the True News Organization and Media Outlets should be free of that. If they want to make Comments let them use the Editorials or Comments Page, and not the Front Page to try and sway Voters.

    Recently a New Standard in Newspapers - they are Not Endorsing any Presidential Candidates in 2024 to the disdain of Staff and Losing Thousands of Subscriptions.

    The newspapers aren’t alone in declining to publish presidential endorsement in the 2024 race. Last week, the Los Angeles Times announced it would not publish a planned endorsement of Kamala Harris, a move that was followed by The Washington Post on Friday. Both the Times’ and the Post’s announcements were followed by a wave of staff resignations and thousands of readers canceling their subscriptions.

    Gannett, owner of the nation’s largest newspaper chain, announced that its more than 200 publications, including USA Today, will not publish presidential endorsements in the run-up to the November 5 election.

    That is one thing I have never understood. Journalism should be fair, factual and unbiased. Anything else is agenda, activism and opinion. Which is pretty much what our mainstream media is, on BOTH sides.

      Additionally, I no longer conduct business with merchants or services who blatantly campaign for maga candidates. How could anyone trust any vendor or service (doctor, banker, teacher, insurance agent, auto repair, etc) who demonstates such poor judgement to be hoodwinked by a known mentally ill felon and liar and then sell their soul for the sake of division and destruction of the constitution? You know who you are and you just lost my business.

    11:40AM - It has been a standard in Journalism for well over 100 years, that Newspapers have been endorsing their Candidates - well before Fox News, MSNBC, Trump, or Harris which could clearly sway their readers. This was completely Unethical, but it was done - it is just this year that Newspapers have figured out that their pasts policies on Political endorsements were Unethical. Yet, doing the Right Thing, has caused Staff Resignations and for them to Loss Subscribers - What does that tell you about the Ethics of the General Public.

    Many will not know about the Famous Newspaper Article that Sparked the Truth about Unethical News - The Chicago Daily Tribune - In the Most Famous Foo-Pah - When they Published an early Edition of their Newspaper on November 3, 1948, the Erroneous Headline and Article Read -
    "Dewey Defeats Truman", and then Truman is photographed holding the Paper as he Wins the Election.

    We can tell by the Comments of 3:33PM, he is a "Daisy", but the real Barry Goldwater was NO - "Daisy - 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1", but this fake moniker of Barry Goldwater is a "Daisy". Which I am sure that he knows nothing about the 1964 Election Advertisements. So look it up - you - "Daisy".

    Again, 2:03PM has a very, very small level of knowledge about the world and even a smaller level of knowledge about politics. Easy to tell with feeble comments.

    A Democratic campaign advertisement known as "Daisy" showed a young girl counting daisy petals, from one to ten. Because the Democrats were trying to scare the Public, because Barry Goldwater, a former Major General wanted to truly defeat North Vietnam and Stop the Rise of Chinese Communism.     4:38PM, I did not see the original advertisement either, but through the ability to read, learn, and understand the knowledge that is available to me I was able to further my education of the world's historical and political happenings even if I was not old enough to have experienced the actual events. So, you just learned a valuable lesson that occurred in History and with the advancement of Television, Internet, and Streaming Services maybe you should spend more time educating yourself on World History and Politics - So you do not end up a "Daisy" too - Gertrude. If you start reading between the lines and open up your mind and join in you may find that knowledge comes from the strangest places, instead of excluding yourself. This America we don’t always have to agree with each other, but we do need to come together as a nation and solve our problems.
