(From the Mcdonald County Sheriff's Office)
On November 16, 2025, at approximately 12:00 PM, an off-duty McDonald County Sheriff's Office deputy was involved in a shooting incident at his residence in the 7000 block of Route E in Powell, Missouri.
While at home, the off-duty deputy observed an unknown vehicle parked in his driveway. The deputy contacted the McDonald County Dispatch Center and provided the vehicle's license plate and VIN. Dispatch confirmed that the vehicle had been reported stolen out of Texas.
The off-duty deputy then requested an on-duty deputy respond to the scene. As the responding unit was en route, a white male approached both the vehicle and the off-duty deputy, stating he was out of gas.
The deputy identified himself as a member of the Sheriff's Office and instructed the male to show his hands. The male began backing away, then produced a handgun and opened fire, striking the deputy in the leg. The deputy returned fire, striking the male. Once the exchange of gunfire ended, the off-duty deputy secured the male in handcuff and provided first aid to both himself and the suspect until additional units arrived.
The suspect was transported by air to a nearby hospital and is listed in critical condition. The deputy was transported by ambulance to another area hospital, later released, and is now recovering at home.
McDonald County Sheriff's Office detectives responded to the scene and initiated a full investigation into the incident. In accordance with Sheriff's Office policy, the names of both the deputy and the suspect will be released after five days.
The deputy has been placed on administrative leave pending the completion of the investigation.
Further information will be released as it becomes available.
