Probable cause: Joplin man high on marijuana when he hit pedestrian

A $100,000 bond has been set for a Joplin man charged with driving while intoxicated-serious physical injury after hitting a female pedestrian Friday at East Markwardt and South Florida.

Chad A. Davis (DOB 1976) told the investigating Joplin Police Department officer it was "incredible" that Mejia Gonzalez was the only pedestrian he hit "and that he suspected he hit more than one pedestrian," according to the probable cause statement.

Chad was speeding through a residential neighborhood and he stated he saw pedestrians on both sides of the roadway, but became distracted by the amount of people. Then he stated that as he approached the intersection of Markwardt/Florida, he saw Mejia in the roadway and slammed on his brakes but could not stop in time.

The investigating officer reported Davis smelled of marijuana, his speech was slow and mumbled and his eyes were bloodshot and dilated.

Additionally, under Miranda warning, Chad confessed to consuming approximately "one blunt" prior to operating his vehicle.

Davis was originally booked on a misdemeanor DWI, but the charge was upgraded after it was learned that Mejia Gonzalez had suffered three broken vertebrae and stitches to the back of her head.

Grew up with and went to school with old Chad. They called him “Fiddy Cent” back in Da’Ville. This was way before the guy from St. Louis called 50 Cent was ever heard of.
Chad got the nickname “Fiddy Cent” because he walked around all the time asking people for 50 cents. Constantly asking everyone for 50 cents. If you didn’t give him 50 cents, he would punch you. And as someone who was on the receiving end of many of Chad’s punches, they hurt. Sorry to see him like this, but I also hope he would never hurt anyone other than punching people who wouldn’t give him 50 cents.

More reasons to have legalized marijuana, so we can have more issues of dwi or death and destruction. Today marijuana is more potent and accessible than ever before. Anyone and everyone with an ache or pain or cannot make it through the stressful day without getting high has to get their daily fix of marijuana. People have to be addicted to whatever today, cigarettes, alcohol, drugs, gambling, etc., heaven forbid that people had to try and stay away from addictions - and try to live a productive life - probably in 100-years civilization will look back and laugh about all these people that find life too difficult to get up every day and just face like our ancestors had to do without having your mind and body manipulated.

I’ve never heard of anyone being addicted to marijuana, and I’ve known plenty of smokers. But I could be wrong.

Yale Medicine - About 10% of people who begin smoking cannabis will become addicted, and 30% of current users meet the criteria for addiction. But cannabis may have harmful long- and short-term effects, such as paranoia and memory loss, and it can be addictive and disrupt a user’s life and relationships.

Regular or heavy use of cannabis can result in the development of tolerance and dependence. A person will need more and more marijuana to achieve the same effects.

Adolescence, a period during which the brain is undergoing major changes, is an extremely poor time period for young people to try the effects of marijuana. Cannabis use in adolescence has been reported to increase the risk for schizophrenia.

Because cannabis is typically smoked, long-term use may harm the lungs. Marijuana also appears to be associated with deficits such as memory and attention problems.

For people trying to quit, withdrawal symptoms may include irritability, restlessness, difficulty sleeping, and hot flashes.
