Rabies case confirmed in McDonald County

(From the McDonald County Health Department)

We want to clarify recent information: A dog from McDonald County was confirmed positive for rabies by the Missouri State Lab.

The dog was treated at a Newton County vet, but the exposure likely occurred in the NW part of McDonald County, possibly from a skunk.

What you need to know:

-90% of rabies cases occur in wildlife (bats, raccoons, skunks, foxes).

-Incubation in pets can be 3–6 weeks.

-Early signs: behavior changes (friendly pets becoming reclusive or vice versa).

-Later stages: aggression, biting, paralysis, excessive drooling, difficulty swallowing.

Protect your pets and family:

-Keep domestic animals vaccinated.

-Avoid contact with wild animals.

Report suspicious animal behavior to local authorities.

Rabies is fatal once symptoms appear—prevention is key!
