Two counts of financial exploitation of the elderly, one felony and one misdemeanor, were filed today in Barton County Circuit Court against former Truman Healthcare activities director Ashley Gastel, as the investigation into the scope of her alleged wrongdoing continues to grow.
According to the probable cause statement, Gastel (DOB 1986) allegedly stole money from five residents by using their debit cards. Two of her alleged victims died before the investigation began and one did not want to press charges.
In her position as activities coordinator, Gastel was authorized to use the residents' debit cards to buy food or other items they wanted.
lt was eventually discovered Ashley was using residents' cards to purchase items and food for herself with multiple residents' debit cards. The total amount discovered which Ashley spent without authorization for her own personal gain is $1180.17. There is also an undetermined amount due to some of the businesses involved not being able to retrieve transactions from the victÃms' cards.
Gastel already had two felony financial exploitation of the elderly charges filed against her earlier in Barton County Circuit Court.

Ashley Gastel, needs to spend a few years behind bars. This is part of elder abuse that happens all the time. Elders are physically, mentally, and financially abused by family, friends, caregivers and even third parties - give her the maximum jail time, not a slap on the wrist and probation.
