The Joplin Globe came out strongly against Amendment 5 in an editorial in today's edition.
According to the editorial writer, the amendment, which would replace Missouri's income tax with increased sales taxes and fees, is a gift to lobbyists and puts too much power in the hands of our representatives at our expense.
From the editorial:
So, Amendment 5 will give more power to lawmakers — perhaps the biggest strike against it — which in turn gives more money to their lobbyist partners roaming the halls in Jefferson City.Amendment 5 looks worse and worse every time we look at it. The pile keeps growing.
Vote to shut this down on Aug. 4.
Gov. Mike Kehoe has already said some sectors of the economy will be exempt, including agriculture, health care or real estate. Whether you agree with those exemptions or not, every exemption only means a higher sales tax imposed on the remaining sectors of the economy.

People like to complain that California and New York have high tax rates, if this amendment passes in Missouri, we will have just as high or even higher taxes than those two states. I don’t believe the governor, when he says they will exempt certain taxes. They may wait a short time, but then they will tax us on those items too. When left to these republican legislators, they will raise tax after tax to pay for their pet projects and we will be at their mercy. Especially if amendment 4 is also passed. We will have no or little ability to stop them, except to vote them out, but that won’t come soon enough for the lower or middle class citizens.
I couldn’t care less what the Joplin Globe has to say about anything, just a typical liberal newspaper
I am voting for Amendment 5. Why? the amount of mandatory state income tax I pay each year vastly exceeds my increased costs from added sales taxes that are placed on items that I voluntarily choose to buy. If it is too much, I can decline to buy those items or services. Scare tactics abound: there is never going to be service taxes on medical care. Never. In Washington State there is no income tax--at present. It is in the state constitution. It has been a magnet for businesses and entrepreneurs. Democrats in that state have passed new income and wealth taxes that are leading many wealth creators and business owners to move to other states. Same magnet in TX, TN, SD, FL, NV, NH, AK, no state income tax. If you want MO to grow and thrive. Passing Amendment 5 is a good move. Otherwise prepare to lose Boeing in St. Louis and many other businesses.
6:46 so you want to pay more taxes? Glad you do because most of us don’t. Impressive that the Joplin Globe is a liberal rag in your opinion, is that true for any and all news sources that aren’t Fox News, or do you just prefer to have a lack of education and knowledge? Inquiring minds want to know!
So farmers get gumbint welfare but don't have to pay taxes on it?
8:35 never say never in Missouri. If taxes don’t bring in enough revenue, they will definitely add on to medical or raise other taxes. When Missouri legislators ended the Capital Gains Tax, the amount they believed would be lost was greatly less than actually occurred. They now have to make that lost amount up plus doing away with income tax. We are looking at making up a huge deficit amount.
8:35 why would businesses close if this amendment doesn’t pass. Majority of businesses have enough tax right offs, they never pay state or federal taxes. Example Trump $750.00 on the one tax return that was released.
