Joplin woman charged with felony after leaving 7-year-old in car in 96 degree heat

The Jasper County Prosecuting Attorney's office filed an endangering the welfare of a child charge against a Joplin woman who allegedly left her 7-year-old son in the car for 20 minutes during 96-degree heat Tuesday.

Jazlan Ashae' Frencher (DOB 2001) is free after posting a $25,000 bond, according to court records.

Her initial appeaarance is scheduled for 9 a.m. August 26 before Judge Nicole Marie Carlton.

From the probable cause statement:

On 08/11/2026, at 2426 S Maiden Ln, Joplin, Jasper County, Missouri, I have probable cause to believe
that Jazlan Frencher committed the crime of Endangering the Welfare of a Child 1st Degree.

On the above date and at the above location, Jazlan left her seven-year-old son, JV1, in a non-running
vehicle by himself in the Wal-Mart parking lot for approximately twenty minutes before I removed him from the vehicle.

Jazlan had exited her vehicle and gone into Wal-Mart around 06:21PM, leaving JV1 in the vehicle. 

Alison Marie Carter called Dispatch around 06:39PM advising that JV1 had shallow breathing and that she could not open the doors. I arrived in the parking lot and was able to fit my arm into a partially open window to get the door open. I removed JV1 from the vehicle around 06:42PM.

Alison Marie Carter advised that when she located JV1 he appeared lethargic and had shallow breathing. When she asked him if he was okay, he could not respond to her. She was able to get him a bottle of water, at which point he was able to respond to her.

During the time of the incident, the current outside temperature was around 96 degrees Fahrenheit and there was an "Extreme Heat Warning", according to my DHWX weather app. The vehicle was in an open parking area where there was no shade. 

Jazlan exited the store and was taken into custody around 06:55PM.
