Stotts City mayor requests assistance from attorney general

(From Stotts City Mayor Tracy Knight)

Mayor Tracy Knight announced today that she has formally requested assistance from state agencies regarding ongoing governance, administrative, and operational challenges affecting the City of Stotts City.

The request follows the release of the Missouri State Auditor’s findings, ongoing concerns regarding city operations, repeated difficulties conducting official city business, and increasing public concerns regarding transparency, accountability, and governmental effectiveness.

“As Mayor, I have a duty to ensure that city government operates effectively, transparently, and in compliance with Missouri law,” said Mayor Knight. “When local challenges exceed the ability of municipal officials to resolve them independently, it is appropriate and necessary to seek guidance and assistance from state agencies.”

Mayor Knight confirmed that a formal request for assistance has been submitted to the Missouri Attorney General’s Office. Additional communications have been initiated with other state and municipal support organizations to identify available resources, technical assistance, and guidance regarding municipal governance and compliance matters.

The requests for assistance are intended to address several ongoing concerns, including:

• Implementation of recommendations identified in the State Auditor’s report.
• Strengthening financial oversight and internal controls.
• Clarification of municipal governance and administrative procedures.
• Improvement of public transparency and access to information.
• Restoration of effective governmental operations and public confidence.

Mayor Knight emphasized that seeking assistance should not be viewed as a sign of failure, but rather as a responsible step toward ensuring that the city has access to the expertise and resources necessary to address complex challenges.

“Residents deserve a government that functions effectively, conducts business openly, and remains accountable to the people it serves,” Knight said. “Seeking outside guidance demonstrates a commitment to solving problems rather than ignoring them.”

Mayor Knight further stated that her administration remains committed to implementing corrective actions, improving city operations, and ensuring that residents remain informed throughout the process.

The City will continue to provide updates as information becomes available and as responses are received from state agencies and municipal support organizations.
