Award-winning Joplin Globe sports reporter Ryan Malashock is headed to the Morning News of Springdale Ark., to cover Arkansas Razorback baseball.
The news was confirmed by Globe Sports Editor Lance Ogden on www.sportsjournalists.com
Questions about Malashock surfaced immediately after Ogden placed advertisements for a sports writer position on www.journalismjobs.com and www.sportsjournalist.com.
The ads read:
The Joplin Globe, a 30,000 daily circulation (37k Sunday), 7-day publication, has an immediate opening for a sports writer. The job is open because the person who last held the position was hired to take on a Division I baseball beat. The successful candidate will prove he or she can write informative, entertaining, hard-hitting pieces and has the ability to go beyond the scope of "gee-whiz" journalism. The Globe is converting to a universal desk on Aug. 16, so the person who's hired for the position will perform minimal design work. Joplin
is home to D-II Missouri Southern State University. Pittsburg (Kan.) State University also is in our coverage area. With the prep football season looming, we are looking to fill this position ASAP. Send resumes, cover letter, references and clips — no more than one game story — to Executive Sports Editor Lance Ogden at
logden@joplinglobe.com or to P.O. Box 7, Joplin, Mo. 64801. Joplin is located in the southwest corner of Missouri and has a "metro area" of 160,000.
Malashock's writing has earned three major regional awards for the Globe this past year, which was reported in other newspapers and on this blog, though I can't recall the Globe itself ever considering the honors newsworthy.
In May, he received first place in sports writing for newspapers with circulation under 100,000 at the annual Kansas City Press Club Heart of America Awards for his feature, "Nick's Memory."
The feature concerned how Carl Junction High School track competitors reacted to the death of star athlete Nick Ross in an automobile accident.
In March, Malashock picked up a first place award for spot sports coverage at the Missouri Associated Press Managing Editors Contest for his article, "Cubs Earn Emotional Victory," and second place honors in sports feature writing for "Renewed Appreciation."
So he is a cartoon?
ReplyDeleteBest I could do on the photo hunt. That was from his days at the Omaha Weekly.
ReplyDeleteHe was known at the Globe as "Sports Hottie," so I'm sure there are some calendar-quality photos available somewhere.
ReplyDeleteCongrats Ryan, and good luck on the new job. Have fun covering the Razorbacks...maybe it will take your mind off the humiliating defeats KU will suffer at the hands of Mizzou this year.
ReplyDeleteWhere the hell have I been? 30k subscribers? Wow, and Chiodo still has a job!?!?
ReplyDeleteRyan has always been a very good writer, and he'll do well in Arkansas.
ReplyDeleteWho's left in the sports department? Anvil, Fryar, Lance and anybody else?
ReplyDeleteThat lineup sounds like the title of a gay porno.
