First official signing scheduled for Turner Report book
The first official signing for my new book, The Turner Report, is scheduled for 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 24, at the Mary K. Finley Library in Lamar. Copies of my novels, Small Town News and Devil's Messenger, will also be available.
I chose Lamar as the site for the first official signing because it was in that city where former Lamar Democrat Editor Lou Nell Clark first gave me the opportunity to learn the business when she hired me as sports editor in May 1978.
The book also includes several stories that touch on Lamar including the story of failed presidential candidate James R. Montgomery, con artist Patrick Dallas Graham, as well as chapters detailing how the government and the media could have prevented 11 deaths at the Anderson Guest House in November 2006 if they had followed the lead of Lamar High School graduate Cait Purinton, who as a teenaged reporter in 1997 spelled out the continuing problems facing the Guest House owners, including a string of fires and fire safety difficulties. A link to the book's first chapter can be found on this page.
