Lee's Summit trainers credited with saving life of player who collapsed in game with Joplin High School

Two Lee's Summit trainers are credited with saving the life of a football player who collapsed and stopped breathing moments after scoring a touchdown in last Thursday night's game at Joplin High School:

"We definitely knew that something was wrong when he took three steps back and sort of collapsed, and that's when we took off running," trainer Angela Hockaday said.

"I just tried to talk to him, tried to get him focused on me, and it kind of deteriorated from there," trainer Steve Taylor said.

Hockaday grabbed a cardiac defibrillator while Taylor started CPR. Two Joplin doctors soon joined them.

"I mean it's just quick quick quick, and everybody was working together to make him stable and get him the medical care he needed," Hockaday said.

When (Jesse) Wood stopped breathing, a jolt from the defibrillator brought him back.

At a Joplin hospital, Wood continued to recover. He is still at the hospital to undergo tests to determine what caused him to stop breathing.
